The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled around five million above-ground pools after concluding that they were connected to the drowning deaths of children.
The pools covered by the July 21 recall were sold at multiple retailers, including Walmart, Target, Costco and Amazon under brand names Bestway, Coleman, Intex and Polygroup, according to a release from the government agency.
The CPSC said in the release that it believes that nine children under 3 years old drowned after gaining access to the pools via compression straps that wrap around the outside of the product between 2007 and 2022.
"This is a textbook example of a dangerous design flaw, plainly visible and clearly hazardous," a joint statement from acting CPSC Chairman Peter A. Feldman and Commissioner Douglas Dziak said. "Years of inaction allowed these tragedies to occur."
Bestway, Intex and Polygroup previously said in a joint statement that the companies have "been actively engaged in continuously reviewing and updating product safety standards for many years," adding that an safety standard for the pools was finalized in May 2025.
